Sankalp BhanACHIEVEMENT AWARD 2008

Awarded to Sankalp Bhan

Sankalp Kishan Bhan is a senior at James E. Taylor High School, Katy, TX, and is son of Sushma and Opinder Bhan.

Sankalp actively participates in Science and Mathematics regional tournaments, is a co-founder of his school's diversity club (Taylor for Tolerance), and is the Principle Bassist at the Greater Houston Youth Orchestra. Sankalp is also working part-time at Newpark Drilling Fluids where he is gaining hands-on experience of analytical instrumentation and petroleum chemistry. His other key activities are tutoring high school students, youth volunteering for local hospitals, Literacy Advance, and Indo-American Charity Foundation.

Sankalp plans to join Washington University (St. Louis) for Chemical or Biomedical engineering. He has a GPA of 4.4 and SAT of 2160.

Yatin MirakhurACHIEVEMENT AWARD 2008

Awarded to Yatin Mirakhur

Yatin Mirakhur is a senior at Hudson High School in Hudson, Ohio and son of Asha and Ramesh Mirakhur. Yatin is the President of his high school’s chapter of National Honor Society and of the Speech and Debate team, and an editor of the school newspaper. He has won numerous awards in Lincoln-Douglas Debate and was a member of a national qualifying team in the JETS TEAMS Science Competition for two consecutive years. Yatin plays tennis for his school and plays the violin. He has performed at Carnegie Hall with the Akron Youth Symphony and was the co-concertmaster of his high school Chamber Orchestra, which won the International Youth and Music Festival in Vienna. Yatin is also an Eagle Scout.

A National Merit and AP Scholar, Yatin will attend the University of Pennsylvania in the fall. He will pursue a joint degree in Life Sciences and Management.

Meghana DharACHIEVEMENT AWARD 2006

Awarded to Meghana Dhar

Meghana Dhar is currently a senior at Harker High School located in San Jose, California. She is attending UC Berkeley next year and intends to major in Business Administration and Economics.

Meghana’s favorite activity is Kathak, which she has been learning for 13 years and Hindustani classical music, which she has practiced for 12 years. She is also very involved with Debate, in which she is nationally ranked and also captain of her team. She received the first place speaker award twice in a row for the international Moot Court competition, a Supreme Court style oral argumentation debate, and an award for the best attorney in Santa Clara County for three straight years in the local Mock Trial competitions. She is currently on Congressman Mike Honda’s student advisory committee and is very interested in politics and government. She hopes to become a corporate attorney after graduating.

Rohit Gunan GanjuACHIEVEMENT AWARD 2007

Awarded to Rohit Gunan Ganju

Rohit Gunan Ganju is a senior at Northview High School in Duluth, Georgia and son of Sid and Jyoti Ganju of Duluth. Gunan is the Co-President and Captain of the Northview Academic team that won the National Quiznet Championship and several Academic bowl tournaments. He represented his high school and won many awards in Science Bowl, Future Problem solving, Policy Debate, and Ocean Science Bowl. Gunan has a GPA of 4.0, SAT score of 2360 and ACT score of 35. He has been active in volunteer work with Beta Club and National Honors Society.

Gunan has earned a Blackbelt in Tae Kwon Do and enjoyed playing classic soccer at U19 level in Georgia. He is a National Merit and AP Scholar and plans to attend Georgia Institute of Technology this Fall on Presidential Scholarship.

Eisha WaliACHIEVEMENT AWARD 2007

Awarded to Eisha Wali

Eisha Wali is currently a senior at Hinsdale Central High School in Hinsdale, IL. She will be attending Northwestern University in Evanston, IL this fall, where she intends to major in Economics while following a pre-med track.

Eisha recently had her Arangetram, signifying her Bharatanatyam dance debut. She recieved a grant from the Illinois Arts Council to continue her dance education and is currently dancing for the Kalapriya Dance Company. She founded the South Asian Students Association at her high school and was co-president. She was president of International Club and was in-charge of the annual Ethnic Fair. She was also a member of the National Honors Society and was a National Merit Commended Scholar. She has spent time volunteering at the local hospital and at a nursing home, and she is currently working as a tutor.

Akshay ChakuACHIEVEMENT AWARD 2008

Awarded to Akshay Chaku

Akshay Chaku is a senior at the International Academy in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, and son of Jyoti and Ashwani Chaku of Troy. Chaku is part of both the FedChallenge team (second in the state) and the state championship Economics Challenge Team. He played four years of varsity tennis for his high school, culminating with captaincy in his senior year. Chaku was a part of both his school’s National and Spanish Honor Societies, and a participant in his school’s Indian American Student Association (IASA). He attends an all-IB School (all classes taught at Higher Level), has a 3.95 GPA (unweighted), 2200 SAT score and 35 ACT score. He will attend the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor in the fall.

Chaku is an avid dancer and has participated in either Raas, Bhangra, or both for his school’s IASA show each of the past four years. He is an IB Diplomma Candidate, enjoys playing tennis and soccer in his free time, along with participating in forensics (he was a state semi-finalist last year, and qualified for the state tournament once again this year).
